Welcome To The Sunday Soundtrack – 01 Nov 09

acoustic-hands

Greetings listeners….

Welcome to the 11th month of 2009. Guess you may have been asking yourself the same question I have….”Where has the year gone?” Seems like just yesterday, I was sitting at this very same spot saying…”Here we are…2009….” Time flies when you’re having fun…or just about doing anything else, it seems.

In any event, I’ve decided to take a small departure from the downtempo, chill, and ambient grooves that I love to present in the podcast and, instead, bring you a combination of smoothness and coolness wrapped up in one. Many of you know I am a guitarist and have played a lil of just about all genres the guitar is known for. I’m currently studying jazz guitar as well, and thought I’d bring you a little bit of what I consider some good jazz guitar, both from a more contemporary delivery, as well as what;s foundational. While I couldn’t present all the guitarists I like, much less deserving of the genre, I’m showcasing a few of my favorite that more than adequately represent.

Out of my collection, I bring to you the world renowned, George Benson (a lil trivia for u, he and vocalist Anita Baker were both involved in what kind of activity as youth?), the young lion (still known to be I guess) Mark Whitfield (currently on tour with Chris Botti), Nick Collione, Mr Smooth – Norman Brown, Steve Laury (ex-guitarist of Fattburger), Russell Malone, the jazz guitar giant Kenny Burrell and my favorite, and the legendary Mr. Wes Montgomery.

I hope u enjoy these offerings of “g”-strings. The playlist is as follows:

1. Strollin’ – Mark Whitfield/Mark Whitfield
2. John L – Nick Colionne/Keepin’ It Cool [Bonus Track]
3. After The Storm – Norman Brown/After The Storm
4. Being With You – George Benson/Best Of George Benson: The Instrumentals
5. Tenderly – Kenny Burrell/Lucky So And So
6. West Coast Blues – Wes Montgomery/The Incredible Jazz Guitar
7. Rise – Russell Malone/Sweet Georgia Peach
8. Sugar Hill – Kenny Burrell/Jazz Masters 45
9. Gone With The Wind – Wes Montgomery/The Incredible Jazz Guitar
10. Soulful Eyes – Steve Laury/Stepping Out
11. Tenderly – George Benson/Best Of George Benson: The Instrumentals

Here is one my FAVORITE new discoveries, Matt Otten. He is inspiration.

All the above artists can be found at Amazon and iTunes. I hope the playlist provided for a relaxing journey through music.

The Sunday Soundtrack is on Facebook as well as Twitter – see the links over there—->

Have a great day, evening, and/or night….

peace, keep it chilled…

Welcome To The Sunday Soundtrack (recast/Apr ’07) – 25 Oct 09

Greetings listeners.

Thank you for joining me once again for yet another edition of The Sunday Soundtrack. I hope it finds u well.

I began a brand new podcast today, but unfortunately got sidetracked with other things (how many of u feel me on this?), so, instead of skipping a week, I decided to do a recast instead. As the title says, it’s actually from April 2007. For those who don’t know the history, the Sunday Soundtrack began in December 2006. An unfortunate incident with my previous host provider (who will remain nameless, though part of me wants to put them on blast), caused me to lose the ENTIRE year of 2007. Google and other search engines have allowed me to recapture cached pages of the playlists, but it remains difficult. Luckily this was one I was able to find. So, I hope u enjoy it.

I appreciate the comments always. If you’re so inclined, always feel free to leave me a message about the podcast. I can be reached at 301.458.0499

Have a great week, and definitely remember….to keep it chilled.

peace,
F!

Greetings Listeners….

I hope this podcast finds u well. I like the graphic chosen for this week’s podcast. It describes how the past few days have been, lots of rain, overcast skies, and a blustery day or two. Frankly, I enjoyed, and still am enjoying every bit of it. It definitely causes me to appreciate the sunny days as well. Days like the ones of recent do provide for some good inspiration, some introspection, etc…so I have an appreciation for them as well.

Glad to inform you that I finally came across some new tracks for the podcast, ones that reflect this weekend as well. Kicking off the podcast is none other than British soul giants, 4Hero. I love their arrangements, big drums, lush big strings, and soulful lyrics. It’s a pleasure, as a musician and listener, to hear musical compositions in this genre that has been missed stateside. Carina Andersson brings that vocal magic to every thing she touches.

I discovered Capsula, Pineapple Corner, J. Boogie’s Dubtronic Science, and Afterlife’s (Smooch) tracks on Groove Salad this week. I think my favorite track on this podcast is Alive (Instrumental). Of course, one can never go wrong with Blackfish or the chill out artist of the century, Afterlife.

That being said, without further adieu, I bring u the play list:

1. Morning Child f/Carina Andersson – 4hero
2. Easy Fly – Pineapple Corner/Pineapple Corner
3. California Sunrise – Blank & Jones/Relax Edition 3 (Sun) – EP
4. Circular Motion – Nuspirit Helsinki
5. Alive (Instrumental) – J-Boogie’s Dubtronic Science/Mushroom Jazz 6
6. Bay of Islands – Blackfish/Pole Navigation
7. Illusion Hill – Capsula/Sense of a Drop
8. Clear Blue Sky – Afterlife/The St. Regis Chill & Groove
9. Smooch – Afterlife/Speck of Gold
10. Gutenmorgenduft – dZihan & Kamien & The Brut Imperial Quintet/Fakes

Thanks to my new listeners, Celeste, Belinda, and Audrey. Big up to Philip Clark for the podcast drop!

I’m gonna relax tomorrow….knowing me, probably in the studio most of the day, catching up on creating!

peace and blessings…

F!

[Edit: Please forgive me for omitting my standard intro voiceover. How I forgot to include it, is beyond me…duh!]

The Musical Journey – The Current Flow

304288_Full

Greetings….

10:15pm, Friday night. The day part was long, and busy, so I am definitely appreciative of this part. I’m sitting in the studio…really chillin’. As usual, I’m thinking of projects that need to continue, get finished, or get started, but tonite…I’m relaxing, and catching up on blogging (*yawn*).

They say when it rains, it pours. It’s been doing that figuratively and literally (more figuratively then literally). For the longest time, I, and my biz partner, Dan McCollum, have been working on our CD project….the longest time is a time I care not to divulge, but hey…life get’s in the way. The CD is entitled “What Love Is”. We are known as After Six Productions. It started out, and still is, a labor of love project, as opposed to one created to get a record deal. We have a record company established under which A6P falls, Hall Effect Records. While we are now down to pretty much nearing completion of the project, we’re really seeing how much work it entails. Our only desire, be it lofty or not, is to put out songs that can stand the test of time. A bit ambitious…maybe…but in light of what the urban music industry is offering, we feel it’s high time for a change….we’ll see. We’re coming.

I won’t bore ya with my humble beginnings, but just let you know what the journey has been like over the last year. I’ve had the studio running for quite some time. This year there have been other projects like recording a four-voice ensemble to a welcome song written for our church mass choir. The result of that demo CD drew similar artists in, with songs of their own from time to time (I have three in the queue currently). Having *clientele* like this is not something I expected at this point, but it gives me an idea what it really takes to produce and learn the recording hardware and software I have.

Over the last few months, I’ve begun a remote collaboration project with two other very talented musicians AND friends I have on twitter: @fave (in Houston) and @toddkelley (in Cali). Fave and Todd have been doing collaboration songs back and forth that I’ve been fortunate to hear. These tracks, everyone, have been slammin’. Down the line, we all started talking about collaborating to some extent. Fave came around and seem to set the wheels in motion, farming out some incomplete tracks to Todd and I to work on, Todd doing the same to Fave, and Fave feeding what Todd and he did to me, for the guitar work. So far, tracks done, and released to the public to hear, have been met with great enthusiasm. The name of the project is called C3 or deeper still, “contempojazzsoulhop”, a name that describes the flow of all three of us combined as one. Here’s Fave talking about the origin and development of the project (yeah, man…we both owe u inputs! LOL):

I’ve been working on my own tracks for years, under a project entitled Songs From The Future (SFTF). While I won’t get into my whole workflow, inspirations and such, songs come to me in many different ways, different times and are often built from a little as something like this. My plan is to get under way with my CD in 2010, as soon as we drop “What Love Is”

Within the last, what, almost two months, I got the grand opportunity (again via Twitter) to be asked to do remixes (seemingly a life long dream), for one VERY funky and soulful artist by the name of Philip Clark. Via some tweets read about the development of “contempojazzsoulhop”, he got wind of the fact that I produce my own music and was always interested in doing a remix. After a little discussion, he approached me and asked if I wanted to do some remixes of tracks from his debut album. Of course I jumped at the chance to do so and picked the track “Granted”. Happy to say that after hearing the rough version, he is pleased with it….but not more pleased that I to know he’s diggin’ it. I plan two other remixes of the track. He’s a pleasure to work with and has displayed a great mind for the business as well. I like what he has in store for the remix project as a whole. I applaud that, as well as his musical flow. Definitely check out his tracks. His official site is here. Much thanks to the shout for my podcast.

As far as live music, I’ve been playing in my church’s music ministry with all the various choirs since 1994 as well as with a band, 150East for a few years now. Here’s a short vid of the band:

Since 150East, I’ve started teaching guitar, as well as studying jazz guitar under a Washington DC guitar instructor and recording artist, Dave Mosick. The latest project about to kick off is with a local sax player and good friend, Kelvin Wilson.

So, needless to say….busy for sure. Just tryna make it happen, and that always starts in ‘The Lab.

I won’t say what time it is now…but, I will say…thank for reading….The weekend is here…let’s go…

Shouts to my boy Fave and Todd for the mad flow!

peace,
Doug

Welcome To The Sunday Soundtrack f/Sade – 04 Oct 09

Sade---The-best-of-Sade

Good evening listeners…

I trust this post finds u well and that your weekend, so far, is great. Earlier in the week, while on Facebook, I was doing my customary video add to my profile and came across a video of Sade from the Lover’s Live DVD (which I proudly own…. 🙂 ) That video post drew a comment from my brother-in-podcasting Darrenkeith, about that particular video, but moreso about the music, the flow, the aura of Ms Helen Folosade Adu. I won’t bore u with the contents of the chat DK and I had (heh), however, I, as well as he, have been long time tremendous fans of Sade. I wont attempt to even describe how much of a fan I am, but it’s like an A-to-Z thing with ALL of her music, as well as the presentation. Watching Lovers Live is like a special event for me LOL… I have literrally daydreamed, on occasion, about what it would be like to be part of her touring band.

Some of you know the word is out that she is planning to release a new CD, with her core musicians from back in the day. I, like many, are eagerly anticipating when this CD will drop. At the same time, I’m wondering just how much of the magic will be released as well. In principle, it’s a little bit like Whitney’s current release, as it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything new. Sade and Whitney are in two different classes altogether, IMHO, so…we shall see what comes forth. For more info on Sade’s upcoming release, you can visit her new website.

PRZ-002214

In staying consistent with the overall vibe of The Sunday Soundtrack, I chose (and it was difficult) to feature some of Sade’s more mellow tracks. In addition, I also included, as a bonus, a three song remix of her track, Cherish The Day, as well. I hope you enjoy this virtual mini concert. That being said, I bring to you the playlist.

1. Your Love Is King – Sade/The Best Of Sade
2. The Sweetest Taboo -Sade/The Best Of Sade
3. Never As Good As The First Time – Sade/The Best Of Sade
4. Love Is Stronger Than Pride – Sade/The Best Of Sade
5. Nothing Can Come Between Us- Sade/The Best Of Sade
6. No Ordinary Love – Sade/The Best Of Sade
7. Like A Tattoo – Sade/The Best Of Sade
8. Cherish The Day – Sade/Lovers Live (Live)
9. Somebody Already Broke My Heart – Sade/Lovers Live (Live)
10. Kiss Of Life – Sade/Lovers Live (Live)
11. Flow – Sade/Lovers Live (Live)

Bonus Tracks: (credit: Bad Boy Soul

Sade Cherish The Day (Epic) 1993 (Pal Joey Remix) (Ronin Remix) (Sade Remix Long Version) 1992

Sade Cherish The Day

Shouts to my brother, Darrenkeith, who has also featured Sade on his latest podcast Ladies of Autumn

Enjoy the flow….keep it chilled.

peace and blessings…

Welcome To The Sunday Soundtrack – 27 Sep 09

16-Fall-Scenic

Good day listeners….

I hope this blog post finds you well. Welcome to the autumnal equinox, we’re into it officially and I’m lovin’ it. Being a four seasons man, I welcome the variety that all four bring, weatherwise. We’ve had a good mix of rainy days and gorgeously sunny days in the area thus far.

Thanks for hangin’ with me through last week’s SSP recast. I’ve got four music projects I’m juggling and have started teaching guitar recently to two students, and have an ongoing fifth project, if you will, recording demos for some of the welcome songs used for our adult church choir (stay tuned for a future blog post on this), so as u can see life is busy…just in THAT area of things.

Today’s flow will be pretty jazzy. My workflow in producing my podcasts is to assemble the tracks in iTunes, record the entire podcast, record the voiceovers, insert the promo drops do the blog post along the way. I extract the playlist from the iTunes view, cut and paste it into the post and GB file. Well, I lost the original iTunes playlist for this week early in the game and had go through over 1000 songs to see what I chose …LOL. Luckily I was able to recall most of them, but…..was too lazy with everything else this weekend, to do strict QA on the list so…forgive if something may be amiss with the flow vs the playlist. I think I got it all right!

That being said…I bring to you this week’s tracklist:

1. Searchin’ – Little Big Bee (The AtJazz Remix)/Sunset Nights
2. Not Just Anybody – Rae and Christian (The AtJazz Flugelhorn Remix)/Sleepwalking
3. Bondi Beach – Blackfish/Hidden Shore
4. Wooter – RDM
5. Optymistic – Tom Middleton/Life Tracks
6. Soon – ORG Lounge/Has It Come To This?
7. Cross That Line – Sine/Cross That Line
8. Falling Man – Espresso del Lago/Yeki

The following videos present AtJazz version of Rae and Christian’s “Not Just Anybody” (track 2 in the playlist), an excellent remix in my opinion, all the way around. The second video is the original version. I like the original as well, *very* chilled.

Glad u stopped by today, I hope the balance of it is to your liking and all your positive endeavors are realized.

On Twitter? You can follow the Sunday Soundtrack there Facebook fan? It’s there as well.

Have a good day, remember to keep it chilled.

Peace,
F!

Welcome listeners..

I’m glad you’ve tuned into another editio of the SSP. It’s been an extremely busy week (my eyes want to close, but it’s only 7:58pm Sunday evening). I had an new SSP to post tonite, but some how have deleted the playlist and frankly feel too lazy to listen through the audio file to see what I put together last week…ugh. With that being said, instead of leaving you musicless this weekend again, I bring u….The Best of Chill. These are the tracks in my collection that I feel, in under an hour, represents the best of what could possibly transform you into a state of relaxed of mind….that is my hope anyway.

Now, the tracklisting, enjoy it to the fullest and remember, multitasking is NOT aloud (wink)

Welcome To The Sunday Soundtrack – 09 Sep 09

Listeners,

How are you? Welcome back to another edition of The Sunday Soundtrack. Always glad you can partake of the music I bring forth. It’s definitely a labor of love and I appreciate the comments left here and abroad. As summer begins to wind down, there is a time that is ending and, as the photo depicts above, a time ahead. Being a four seasons man, I always anticipate the vibrant colors and crisp, cool weather of the autumnal equinox, better known as Fall. While summer is always known to be more care free and lazy, Fall has it’s own goodness to me, and in that…bring it on.

The tracks I bring to you for this podcast are mainly new. As usual, the pics come my favorite source, Soma FM. Incidentally, 60% of the tracks this time came within 3 hours of off and on listening this Friday night.

Inner Shade brings us Little Sunflower, a well made remake of the classic Freddie Hubbard tune, with a twist of drum and bass influence as the foundation of track. I also particularly enjoy the tune because Inner Shade is a spinoff group of Incognito. The CD, 4 Corners, is their solo release, which I think is becoming more difficult to come by. If you happen to find it, definitely add it to your collection. It features the jazz guitar work of Mark Whitfield and the soulfully vocal goodness of Maysa Leak (the primary female lead vocalist Incognito is known for).

In honor of Vikter Duplaix’s new CD and single release entitled “Electric Love”, I bring you an old favorite of mine and a track perfect for the Sunday Soundtrack musical palette, “Another Love Gone By” featuring Esthero.

Another artist I’m happy to feature is Philip Clark…the NEW definition of blue eyed soul. I became acquainted with PC via Twitter after we crossed paths via some musical collaborationwork I am doing with fellow brothers in podcasting Fave and The Big La Todd Kelley, now known as “C3”. After checkin’ out PC’s tracks on Myspace…I was DEFINITELY feelin’ his musical flow. Per further discussion, he “Granted” me (pun intended) the great opportunity to do a remix of a track of my choice from his last CD. Needless to say, after being a remix fan for YEARS, I hopped on it. He knows what track it is, but P, if you are reading this…I’ve got three remixes I am working on of said track…three different genres…I hope you like them!

As for some “smooth jazz” goodness, I was led to include a track, dedicated to a person on Twitter who continually tweets inspirational, resourceful, and heart warming messages everytime I notice them. The track “Monica” is for you, Monica, better known on Twitter as Deltavogue…thanks for the very nice complements you gave the Sunday Soundtrack last week. I greatly appreciate it!

With that being said, the playlist for this weekend is as follows:

1. Little Sunflower – Inner Shade/4 Corners
2. Monica – Fattburger/The Best Of Fattburger
3. Granted – Philip Clark/The State Of Blue-Eyed Soul
4. Sanso Sheep – Jens Buchert/Ice Lounge
5. Sands of Time – Ten Madison/Grounded
6. IMG.00.37 – Akotcha/Sound Burger
7. Elephant (Dub Mix) – Spiral System & Lottie Child/Here We Are – EP
8. Another Great Love Gone By Featuring Esthero – Vikter Duplaix/Bold & Beautiful
9. Reflections – Jens Buchert/Sunrider
10. Billy Bibbit – Moss/East Coast Chip Shop

I hope you’ve enjoyed this edition of the Sunday Soundtrack. Kudos to all my podcasting massive, bring good musical vibes all week long: Darrenkeith (My Love For Music), Fave (The Friday Favecast), Todd Kelley (Flowink), Macedonia (BSOTS), EJ Flavors (OSW), T. Grundy (Rhythms In Black Satin), DJ Diva (The Monday Mixtape), Honeysoul (Honeysoul), Anjibee (The Chillcast), Nikki (Soulrific) and a host of others. Check all their podcasts out under my category Music Podcasts, over there to the right!

Have a good week….
Keep it chilled…
peace,
F!

Welcome To The Sunday Soundtrack – 30 Aug 09

Picture 1

Greetings listeners….

I hope all is well. It was a pretty long work week that just past, and while chillin’ in studio Friday night, I get this alert on my phone:

From: SomaFM
To: Doug R
ReplyTo: dj@somafm.com
Subject: Live Space Shuttle coverage tonight on Mission Control
Sent: Aug 28, 2009 10:26 PM

Dear Doug R:

Sorry for the late notice, hope you get this in time:

After 2 aborted attempts earlier this week, Space Shuttle Mission
STS-128 is set to launch tonight (in just a couple hours) at 9pm
pacific, midnight Eastern time (04:00 GMT) on a flight to the
international space station.

We’ll be mixing ambient music and the live mission audio from NASA on
our new Mission Control channel. You can tune in at http://somafm.com

If you’re using a device that needs a direct stream link, that is:
http://somafm.com/missioncontrol.pls

We hope you’ll tune in!

Best of luck to Commander Rick Sturckow and the crew of STS-128

At that time I was still trying to decide on the tracks for this weekend’s podcast, then……the light bulb went off. I had never done a pure ambient show before….at least before now ;-). So, I present to u, The Sunday Soundtrack STS-128 Mission Control Flow. I know that I have a few ambient fans out there, as well as a few Twitter followers that express keen NASA interest, either as an employee or enthusiast (some of you know I supported NASA as a systems engineer for 8 years, and began my career in satellite communications in 1988). I had the good fortune of visiting Cape Canaveral to view a launch of satellite that was one of ten that got put into orbit, part of a Dept of Navy program I worked on. If you ever have a chance to view a launch, take advantage of it…it still excites me.

That being said, I present to you this week’s playlist:

Space Shuttle Discovery Launch audio. The STS-128 mission to the International Space Station.

♫ Yuminale – On The Eve Of Loxic Streams
♫ Velocette – Space Q
♫ Steve Roach, Erik Wollo – Stream Of Thought 19
♫ Disturbed Earth – Temple
♫ Spice Barons – Voyager (And What Did You Think Of The First Episode)
♫ Anthony Rother – Elixir Of Life Part I
♫ Gas – Zauberberg V
♫ Alpha Wave Movement – Silent Promise
♫ Natural Frequencies Aka Andreas Leifeld – Timeless
♫ Harold Budd – The Room Alight
♫ William Edge – Not Returning Home

I hope you’ve enjoyed the ambient flow this weekend. As I’ve said previously, you can find tracks like these, as well as other excellent chillout and electronica tracks at Soma FM as well as follow them on Twitter

For getting excellent launch and mission coverage, follow Space Launch News on Twitter.

Special shout out to Hidden Place and Steph, my ambient expert and NASA bud.

Keep it ultra-chilled.

peace,
F!
