Quiktraks (60 sec audio) Day 1

Greetings crew…

Hope all is well. For those of you who know me, you know I am not only a podcaster, but a musician as well. I own a home studio, play in a band, and I’m currently in the works of finishing up a CD with my recording partner.

I’ve been playing and recording (even as in the beginning just to cassette tape) since I was 14. The technology has come a lonnng way and my choice of digital audio workstation is Logic Studio. I’m the kind of person that loves to make use of the many resources out on the internet, especially recording tutorials that reflect not only the kind of equipment I use, but the kind of music I like to record. On YouTube alone, I have collected over 4GB of tutorials on Logic Pro 7 and 8 alone, as well as great user tutorials on the MPC 1000. With that being said, I have found that I have been doing more watching than actual putting to use what I have watched and learned.

Enter Quiktraks (60 sec audio). This lil project simply is an attempt to record and upload daily, no more than 60 secs of anything I feel like recording or have recorded: ideas, throwaway tracks, experiments, etc. The tracks are more so to help me use what I have and learn more then simple watching excellent users teach it. In the end, I feel I’ll eventually learn the ins and outs of the tools I use to make music, especially an extremely power digital audio workstation like Logic Studio.

With that being said, here’s the Day 1 track – Midnite Vibe

Background Notes:

– Recorded with Logic 7.2 Express, no keyboard controller, just the keyboard keys
– Computer: Mac Powerbook G4 Aluminum
– Loops used: Piano, hip-hop drums
– Track processing plugins: Goldverb, Chorus, Parametric and Channel EQ
– My guitar: Takamine EG-544SC-4C Acoustic.

All and any constructive criticism from my recording studio heads are more than welcome! I’d to hear all the technical comments about the mix.

My personal tracks are on my Myspace page
The Lab is here.

Thanks!
F!

I had a nice weekend last weekend and this weekend has offiicially started. Today was representative of a true spring day, in every sense of the word. The Sunday Soundtrack Pt. 2 – 12 Apr 2009

(Thx to AK for the photo “donation” [wink])

Welcome back (smile). This is a first…two podcasts in one day. I was going to save this one for next week, but I’m in the mood to bring it from both ends today. I like the tracks I found this week and wanted to bring them forth. One, of course, as mentioned is your’s truly, with a track I featured before, Cham’s Groove. This track is one I wrote while on business travel in Guam. Inspired by the people there, the city, the etc. I composed it and recorded it right there in my hotel room…ahhh technology (wink).

On the playlist this week is the hip-hop influenced chill out of none other than the world renowned DJ Cam and independent artist, Skipless, of the indie label Dusted Wax, the smooth downtempo of pearlcoder out of Germany, and two new artists I just discovered week, via XM Radio, Rory Hoy and Bluemind. Presenting…the playlist:

1. Kalimba Groove – DJ Cam/Liquid Hip Hop
2. Alter – Skipless/Rooftops
3. Cham’s Groove – Groove 7/SFTF – Barrigada Sky
4. jazzilanvon – pearlcoder/moving pattern session 1
5. Marrakech (Specek Main Mix) – Incognito/Future Remixed
6. Hypnotease – Rory Hoy/Cosmic Child
7. Really – Bluemind/Om Chilled, Vol. 2

Seven tracks….a complete number. Enough to whet your musical appetite? I hope so. As always, u know I like to keep it short, sweet, and to the point…..the point being…chilled beats.

Lazy with the links today, folks, grrr. All the artists above can be found on iTunes (with the exception of Skipless, and…..me). For more information, check Discogs.com as well.

Two shout outs today. First, big up to my boy Donny Shelton. Donny and I go back to middle school. Thanks for the call about the Sunday Soundtrack enjoyment, both from a listening and audiophile standpoint…I appreciate the comment…let me know when you can listen to it on that high end system of yours!. Second one to Regina in NYC…hey you! Thanks for the e-mail comments on the podcast….glad it can get your through your work day and complaining co-workers (wink).

Welcome back again, friends/listeners. Ok, this is technically still the Sunday Soundtrack since it was uploaded before 12am PST (my rules…lol) I trust all is well. This particular SSP returns to the essence of downtempo and chill. There are two tracks from your’s truly, Groove 7, as well as a childhood friend, Erasto.

Been a long week, was in training Monday through Friday and had a very busy weekend, so this Sunday evening is the first I had a chance to wind down. With some documentation work ahead of me, I may just re-listen to this in The Lab…candles lit and all.

Welcome To The Sunday Soundtrack f/Ben Tankard – 29 Mar 09

Hello listeners…

I trust all is well with you. As some of you know, I’ve been on a 21-day fast, one that leads up to Resurrection Day, and I will admit, it has NOT been easy in some key areas, but in the spirit of the fast and the meaning behind it, I’ve decided to feature some tracks by some artists whose music is closely related to the reasoning behind the fast I am undertaking. The first artist is gospel smooth jazz keyboardist Ben Tankard.

I discovered Ben over ten years ago, when the whole genre of gospel jazz was pretty new, as well as new to me. I hadn’t thought of such a combination would exist, but exist it did and still does. Upon discovering it and him, my own musical compositions and live playing took an additional direction…even leading to the formation of a group I current play with, 150 East. I’ve purchased every original release Mr. Tankard has put out, save the “Best Of” compilations…and they are all well worth listening to.

All Music Guide says this about Ben Tankard:

He’s been called “the Quincy Jones of Gospel,” and besides being one of the best-selling instrumentalists in Christian music, keyboard player Ben Tankard has justified his tag, producing many stellar gospel projects as well as serving as an executive vice-president at Tribute Records, for which he has recorded extensively. Born in Florida to a minister father and a missionary mother, he began playing drums in church at the age of three. He later graduated to tuba and was offered several music scholarships to college, though he eventually accepted a basketball scholarship instead.

Tankard endured a rough period of depression and homelessness when a knee injury prevented him from turning professional (though he was drafted by the NBA). A visit to a revival service put him on the right track, an almost overnight, he became a very talented keyboard/organ player. Tankard began his witness in song with 1990’s Keynote Speaker, recorded for Tribute Records. He continued recording and soon moved into production and arranging as well, calling on his reserves of early musical training to provide impeccable jobs for Yolanda Adams, the Alabama State Mass Choir and Michael Bruce. His albums were often light jazz works, offering soothing, reflective gospel instrumentals that were similar to mainstream efforts from George Benson and Kenny G. By 2002, he had released enough albums to put together a “best of” collection, highlighted by a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “You Will Know” featuring Take 6. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Introducing…the playlist:

Kume-Bi-Yah – Ben Tankard/Instrumentally Yours
Instrumentally Yours – Ben Tankard/Instrumentally Yours
Play Me In Your Key – Ben Tankard/Play Me In Your Key
I Believe You Love Me Now – Ben Tankard/The Minstrel
Week-End Forecast – Ben Tankard/Let’s Get Quiet – The Smooth Jazz Experience
Ben’s Coffee House featuring Tim Bowman – Ben Tankard/Play A Lil’ Song For Me
Overjoyed – Ben Tankard/Play A Lil’ Song For Me
Ribbon In The Sky – Ben Tankard/Song Of Solomon
What A Friend – Ben Tankard/Keynote Speaker
For God So Loved The World – Ben Tankard/Keynote Speaker
Be With You – Ben Tankard/Keynote Speaker
Welcome Into This Place – Ben Tankard/Instrumentally Yours
Eden – Ben Tankard/The Minstrel
You Will Know – Ben Tankard/Instrumentally Yours

Here’s Ben’s cover of “You Will Know”

…and his track “Play Me In Your Key” with guest Kirk Whalum

The online presence of Ben Tankard is as follows:
The Ben Tankard Website

You can listen to an interview with him regarding his latest CD, “Let’s Get Quiet”, here

All the tracks listed above can be found on iTunes, Amazon, and various other places…as well as in retail stores.

Thanks for listening to another special edition of The Sunday Soundtrack.

peace…!

Flickr + Music = some kinda bliss for me

Ever since I discovered Flickr, there has been a love relationship. Not only is it an over expansive resource for photographic imagery, but I’ve never seen an online photo gallery with the finesse, coolness, and all time greatness of Flickr.

Being a musician, I have to, once again, echo those niceties because of the groups I’ve joined and the overall friendliness of the musicians I’ve met as members along the way. I’ve learned a lot about many aspects , outreach in the world of music, which can mean a great deal for the success of your marketing. This brings me to an article I discovered the other day.. Maybe some of the other musicians can agree. Check it out here: Why every musician should have a Flickr account.

Feeback anyone?

peace,
F!

Welcome To The Sunday Soundtrack – 22 Mar 08

Hello listeners! Welcome back to the Sunday Soundtrack.

HAPPY VERNAL EQUINOX (Spring has finally arrived….although the temps on Friday were NON seasonal…haha). In any event, bye bye Winter… I’m ready for spring and the birth of all things refreshing. Hope everyone is doing well. I don’t feel particularly chatty today, although I don’t really know if I’m ever seen as such in these blogposts….(I would say not but…). I will say that I like this particular assembly of tracks for this podcast edition. I went back and discovered artists such as Andy Caldwell and Sounds From The Ground. As you know, anything out of The Blackfish collective, I am thoroughly down with! I hope you enjoy this set as well.

I’ve started paying more attention to Myspace as well as The Podsafe and Creative Commons networks. They happen to be most excellent resources for the tracks I feature here. Virtual head nod to them both. With that being said, the playlist is as follows:

1. Invierno – Andy Caldwell/Pan Global Electro Lounge Vol. 1
2. deepster – attic tree/moving pattern session 1
3. Anagram – Dousk/D.I.Y.
4. Deepness Is Served – J. Axel/Deepness Is Served
5. 93 Reasons – Platonic/Sound In Color, Vol. 1
6. Eclipse On 5th – Sounds from the Ground/Brightwhitelight
7. Optymystic – Tom Middleton/Life Tracks
8. Stay Home And Chill – Headphonism
9. The Sweetness of Charity [spoken word] (The Groove 7 Edit) – Racquel
10. Destiny – Zero 7/Ultra Chilled

Next week…brand new tracks…I’m looking forward to bringing you those, as well as more material by yours truly…straight from The Lab. Stay tuned!

Poll: Physical CD purchase vs digital downloads?

Hello All…

I trust all is well with you and with that trust remains hope all the same.

I’ve been doing some necessary research lately on a topic I think most if not all can relate to (the subject says it all). I would appreciate if you take a few minutes to participate in the poll posted below, I would highly appreciate it (some of you know my reasoning behind presenting this). Afterwards, click on the following link to read a related article and based on what you know, see if you agree or disagree. Again, thanks much!!

The related article is here. (Big thanks, (though she had no idea) to Elements Of Jazz for posting this link literally minutes after I finished designing the poll!!)
